4 Ways To Lower Cholesterol Naturally

High cholesterol is pretty common in America. And because of it, billions of dollars are spent on cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins.

But the truth is, there are ways to lower cholesterol naturally. Free from side-effects and just as effective as the drugs themselves.

Of course, always consult with your doctor first, before deciding to ditch cholesterol meds in favor of natural methods.

Here are four ways to lower cholesterol naturally:

Diet – this is probably most effective way to do it. Eliminate processed foods. Stay clear of sugary beverages. Instead, eat unprocessed foods like organic, grass-fed meats. Eat plenty of dark, green veggies like broccoli, spinach and kale. Eat fruits like oranges, kiwis, blueberries, and kiwi fruit. And eat complex carbs high in soluble fiber. This includes foods like brown rice, oatmeal, and quinoa.

Exercise – not only is a long-term exercise program a great way to lower cholesterol, it raises your HDL “good” cholesterol too. HDL cholesterol protects your heart. For instance, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that subjects with low HDL levels were 8 times more likely to have cardiovascular disease than those with higher levels. And get this… every 1mg/dl increase in HDL cholesterol was responsible for a 6% lower risk of death from heart attack. Lesson to be learned: you should strive to lower LDL “bad” cholesterol and raise the good.

Supplementation --  Diet and exercise are the two best ways to lower cholesterol. And supplementing is the third. The best supplement you can take is omega 3s. You can find it in fish oil at your local health food store in capsule form. Or you can get it in olive oil, or flax seed oil. Don’t be shy with getting enough of these fats either. They help lower cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol. So go for it. Also, nuts (especially walnuts) are a great source of omega 3s. Another little-known but effective supplement for heart health is vitamin B. A good vitamin B complex will do. But make sure it contains at least 800 mcg of folate. That’s because folate, along with vitamin B is effective at breaking down homocysteine. Homocysteine is a protein that can wreak havoc on your heart. One study, known as the Physician’s Health Study found that subjects with high homocysteine levels were at three times greater risk of having a heart attack! But here’s the scary part… these findings were independent of the participants’ cholesterol levels.

Have a drink or two-- Moderate alcohol consumption is proven to raise HDL “good” cholesterol. The same issue of JAMA that reported the study on high HDL vs. low HDL reported that 1-2 drinks a day increased HDL by 12%. Of course, don’t abuse alcohol. Stay within the 1-2 drink limit. Abusing alcohol is destructive to your health, so use caution.

As you can see, drugs aren’t always necessary to lower your cholesterol. There are many natural ways to lower cholesterol effectively. But always talk to your doctor before choosing any of these options.

To a healthier, happier you!
